The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 publisher CD Projekt launched Good Old Games, since shorted to GOG, in 2008. The digital store delivers DRM-free PC games of all kinds while also making a significant effort to keep older games alive, going as far back as Amiga games like 1987’s Defender of the Crown. The site is also relatively generous with free games, with GOG giving away the sci-fi action RPG Dex back in August.

It just so happens that GOG’s current free game, Genesis Alpha One Deluxe Edition, is another indie science fiction action title. Developed by indie studio Radiation Blue and published by Team17, Genesis Alpha One is an FPS roguelike set in a dystopian future. Players take the role of the captain of a starship sent out on a last-ditch attempt to save humanity from extinction. Players will need to manage and expand their ship as they explore a vast, randomly generated galaxy.
Space is dangerous, and Genesis Alpha One players must protect their ship from alien infestations threatening their mission and survival. However, threats can also present opportunities, letting players modify their crew with alien DNA. They still need to be careful, as their mission is over if all their crew members die. Failed runs aren’t the end of the mission, however, as the relics that players find and corporations they unlock will persist into future runs.
Genesis Alpha One has generally mixed reviews, with the PC versions having an average of 67 on Metacritic. Still, those who like the game seem to like it a lot, and the right kind of player will enjoy Genesis Alpha One in spite of its flaws. The giveaway ends on October 30, so now might be a good time for curious gamers to give the sci-fi roguelike a shot.
The giveaway is part of GOG’s Halloween Sale running until November 3. It includes a significant discount on over 3,000 games such as 80% off The Witcher 3 GOTY Edition, Alien: Isolation, Dishonored 2, and BioShock Infinite Complete Edition. Meanwhile, Dishonored - Definitive Edition, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, and Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition are 75%, 70%, and 60% off. Finally, anyone looking for some spooky new releases can grab the retro FPS Hands of Necromancy or the horror visual novel Corpse Factory.
