GoW3’s director, Stig Asmussen talked with GamePro about where previous series directors David Jaffe and Cory Barlog imagined the series would be going:
Jaffe’s idea sounds like it can be doing awesome things, especially putting Kratos in the Norse world where all gods die in Ragnarok, he’s practically made to fill that role. Barlog’s approach seems more logical and a bit conservative on both surprising players and “continuing” the character of Kratos. I would have to agree with Asmussen though, while both are really interesting ideas, they wouldn’t be his own and he wouldn’t have been as involved in it.
Cory Barlog talked about Kratos becoming Death. He pretty much becomes the Grim Reaper at the end of the game and his blades become sickles.
They’re both incredibly good ideas, but you need a director to be passionate about the story and understand it intimately. If I had used Dave or Cory’s idea, I wouldn’t have been as passionate about it."
The series ended in a way that, I thought, was appropriate for the character of Kratos. If Sony opted to try to do something again down the line and use Jaffe’s idea to place it in Norse mythology, it could work. For now, though, I think it’s time to give the series a bit of a rest.
